With Casa Balate, the owner realised his dream house in Sicily. The newly built architect’s house is located on the last hills of the Iblei with a view of the baroque town of Noto and the Ionian Sea. With its simple modernity, it fits perfectly into the peaceful oasis of the Mediterranean maquis and the garden with olive, almond and carrubo trees.
In the design, architect Mimmo Peraino placed emphasis on impressive lines of sight and an open feeling of space. Generous panoramic glass doors seamlessly connect the inside with the outside. Further attention was paid to the choice of materials, the characterful surfaces and the staging of natural and artificial light. Local building materials such as the natural stone from Trapani and the muri a secco limestone contrast with the cement look of the walls and ceilings made of natural plaster.
A spacious kitchen, dining and living area of about 70m2 on two levels opens onto terraces with views of Noto and its hilly landscape as well as the Gulf of Noto, Vendicari and the south-eastern tip of Sicily. The space is characterised by a continuous muro a secco wall, the graphic patterned stone floor and the black granite kitchen block.
Two spacious bedrooms look out onto green oaks, pines and carrubo trees, which create a pleasant, cool microclimate in summer, while a small bedroom catches the setting evening sun. Each of the rooms has its own bathroom with fine stone basins and showers are taken in front of large sliding doors, as if you were outdoors.
Outside, the 15-metre-long infinity pool, which seamlessly connects to the terraces, extends the architectural design and borders the structure to the garden.
The morning sun gently warms the wide-roofed north terrace, which is already in cool shade by midday and is perfect for lunch and dinner. The pool terraces, on the other hand, do not miss a ray of sunshine. In the evening, the Mediterranean scent of sage, rosemary and thyme surrounds the house. Sunset cocktails can be enjoyed by the lights of Noto, Marzamemi and Portopalo on the roof terrace.
A 10-minute drive from Noto, the house is in the heart of Val di Noto and not far from the baroque towns of Scicli, Modica and Ragusa. Nearby are the beautiful sandy beaches of Vendicari (30 min.) and the romantic fishing village of Marzamemi. Siracusa with its Greek excavations, museums and 2600 year old Athena temple is the cultural treat of the region. The natural parks of Vendicari, Pantalica and Cava Grande, on the other hand, surprise with their scenic diversity.
